Manang

Manang is the biggest village, situated at an altitude of 3,540 meter in the Trans Himalayan region of Nepal. It is also a major village in the Nyeshyang valley (upper Manang) and the most famous place in the Annapurna Circuit. Manang is half-way round the circuit and can be reached in about 4-6 days from the nearest road. The area is composed of stark, rocky terrain, very similar to the Tibetan plateau, and is dotted with turquoise lakes, including Lake Tilicho (4,919 m), the world’s highest lake.

Manang lies below the Thorong La Pass (5,416m) situated within the Annapurna conservation area. Thorong La Pass is one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Yak roam the valley sides surrounded by stunning 6,000 to 8,000m peaks, and the area also contains high concentrations of endangered species such as snow leopard and blue sheep. The area is a botanist's paradise with rare flowers and herbs in abundance.

Due to its proximity to some of the highest mountains in the world, Manang has been an essential base for trekkers and mountaineers exploring this area. For those interested in local culture, there are many monasteries in the area open to visitors. The famous Tibetan saint Milerepa meditated nearby-the walkup to his cave on the side of Annapurna III takes only half a day.
