China to extend railways to borders with India and Nepal

China plans to build two further railway lines in Tibet, one of which will extend into the politically charged border region with India.

Next month, China will inaugurate a new engineering marvel, a line connecting Lhasa with Tibet's second city, Shigatse.

After 12 years of planning and construction, the £1.3 billion, 160-mile stretch of track will cut a five-hour road journey to a two-hour train trip.

Like the route to Lhasa, a technical marvel that is built in parts on permafrost, the construction of the line to Shigatse was grimly difficult, with 96 tunnels and bridges making up half of the route, which runs at an altitude of some 13,000ft.

The new line will open up the south of Tibet to tourism and, crucially, to further mining.
