Dolpo Region

Printer Version Page

The Dolpo region, which lies in the mid western region of Nepal, is the natural epitome of high passes, rare flora and fauna, wilderness, and sweeping landscapes, besides being enriched by the traditional Tibetan cultural heritage. Dolpo is surrounded by Dhaulagiri from South and Tibet from north and lies on the northern side of Himalayas.  The entire region is also a rain shadow area and the climatic situation of this place is same as that of Mustang.

Dolpo was first opened for trekking in 1991. The region provides one of the longest treks in Nepal, i.e., Dolpo Trek that takes 34 days to complete. In this trek, the maximum elevation will be 4,530 m. to 5,115 m. and is one of the most strenuous treks of the country. Only fully supported camping treks provide access to this remote region and requires a special permit which costs higher than other region.

The trek lies inside Shey Phoksundo National Park, which is home to hundreds of animals and birds including Blue sheep, Mountain Goat, Jackal, Wolf and the legendary Snow Leopard.

Dolpo region trek can be divided into two parts - Upper Dolpo Trek and Lower Dolpo Trek. Each trek has its own specialty and attractions.
