Island Peak Climbing

Printer Version Page

Island Peak (6,187m) is one of the most popular climbing and trekking peaks in an adventurous region in Nepal. Often known as Imja Tse peak, it is an extension of the ridge that comes down from the south end of the Lhotse Shar. The peak was first ascended in 1953 by British expedition team as preparations for the Everest climb and even today the Island peak climbing is a first step before attempting any giant summits of the Himalayas. The peak’s popularity can be attributed to its technically straightforward ridge, which attracts a lot of novice climbers who don’t have prior knowledge and experience of snow and ice climbing. Putting simply, a physically fit and acclimatized person is well qualified to make an ascent on the peak.

Island Peak climbing takes the trekkers into full adventurous heartland of the Khumbu region i.e., Gokyo Lake (4,750m), Everest Base Camp (5,357m), Kalapatthar (5,545m) and Gokyo Ri (5,357m). Furthermore Island Peak Climbing crosses two important high passes of the Khumbu region i.e. Chola Pass (5,420m) and Kongma La Pass (5,535m).The peak also offers wonderful opportunity to have magnificent close-up views of great Himalayas including five of the world’s highest mountains, i.e., Mount Everest (8,848m), Mount Makalu (8,463m), Mount Cho Oyu (8153m), Mount Lhotse (8,501m) and Mount Lhotse Shar (8,393m).

Moreover, the expedition also provides variety of unique natural and cultural experiences. Besides high mountains, the trek also passes through superb rhododendron forests, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls, hills, lakes, Himalayan flora and fauna and several Sherpa villages.
